The Annual Houdini Séance: A Tradition of Mystique and Memory
Each year on October 31, cities with historical ties to the legendary illusionist Harry Houdini become the stage for a unique and eerie tradition: the Official Houdini Séance. These cities, which either hosted Houdini during his illustrious career or have a significant connection to his life, honor his memory through this annual event. Among the dedicated participants is Tom Boldt, one of about a dozen individuals who gather around a table, attempting to contact the long-deceased illusionist and renowned Appleton native.
The séance, officially recognized and copyrighted as the Official Houdini Séance, owes much of its legacy to the late Sid Radner. Radner, a devoted Houdini enthusiast and friend of Tom Boldt, became involved with the séance in the 1940s. His passion for preserving Houdini's memory led him to seek a copyright for the event, ensuring its continuation as a cherished tradition held in various locations each year.
Houdini, who passed away on Halloween in 1926, had made a pact with his wife, Bess. The agreement was that she would attempt to contact him from the afterlife once a year for a decade. Despite her devoted efforts, Houdini never appeared. At the conclusion of the 1936 séance, Bess declared, "Turn out the light, it is finished. Good night, Harry," marking the end of her attempts. However, Houdini's friends and fans refused to let the tradition die. The annual Halloween séance persisted, evolving into a means of generating conversation about Houdini in the communities that host the event.
This yearly gathering not only serves as a tribute to Houdini's legacy but also keeps the intrigue and mystique surrounding his life and career alive. Each séance is a blend of history, tradition and a touch of the supernatural, drawing in both skeptics and believers alike. Through this enduring ritual, Houdini's spirit continues to captivate and inspire, just as he did in life.
